Video: Explosion in train near Castricum; 1 hurt, 650 evacuated

An explosion in a train’s electricity box left one person injured on Sunday evening. About 650 people were evacuated from the train that had stopped on the tracks near Castricum, the security region reported.

The electricity box was behind a wall, and part of the wall blew away in the explosion. The injured person had to go to the hospital. A spokesperson for the security region could not say how severe their injuries were.

The explosion also caused smoke. Three people had to be checked for smoke inhalation.

The train’s power was cut off, according to the security region. It was crowded in the vehicle, and temperatures quickly rose, the spokesperson said.

The evacuated travelers were picked up by evacuation trains. All travelers were evacuated safely.

The NS website showed that no trains were running between Alkmaar and Uitgeest after the explosion. NS deployed buses instead, a spokesperson confirmed. The restrictions were lifted around 11:00 p.m.

The NS spokesperson said that it was still unclear how the explosion happened. She called it “very bad that travelers had to go through this.” The cause of the incident will be investigated.
