Broken overhead line strands night train to Austria; 500 travelers evacuated
A broken overhead line stranded the Night Jet train from Amsterdam to Innsbruck in Austria between Arnhem and Nijmegen last night. ProRail and NS had to evacuate around 500 stranded travelers.
The evacuation went smoothly, and everyone was off the broken train by around 10:00 p.m., a ProRail spokesperson told NU.nl. They each got a voucher for booking a hotel so that they had somewhere to spend the night.
“Many hotels in the Utrecht area were full. 60 passengers could not find a hotel,” the ProRail spokesperson said. NS placed a train for them at Utrecht Central Station so that they at least had heating and a roof over their heads. About 15 passengers made use of that option. The others took a train to Amsterdam to find a hotel there.
ProRail fixed the overhead line between Arnhem and Nijmegen overnight. Train traffic resumed on the line at around 7:30 a.m. on Tuesday.
