Dutch man, 70, faces life sentence in Laos after 5.8 kilos of heroin found in luggage

A 70-year-old Dutch man was arrested at an international airport in Laos after authorities discovered 5.8 kilograms of heroin concealed in his luggage. The man now faces a possible life sentence in the country, which is notorious for its harsh prison conditions, according to De Telegraaf.

Laotian customs agents found the heroin during a routine inspection on Thursday. The drugs were hidden in aluminum-lined blankets packed into two travel bags. Officials confirmed the arrest followed the discovery.

The arrest occurred amid a broader crackdown on drug trafficking and smuggling in Laos. Authorities have intensified efforts in recent weeks, particularly at Wattay International Airport, where multiple large-scale drug operations have taken place.

At the end of last month, officials seized more than 134 kilograms of narcotics in separate incidents at the same airport. Several international suspects were taken into custody as part of these operations. The raids were conducted by agents from the Anti-Smuggling and Investigation Division, customs officers, immigration police, and staff from the international terminal protocol.

Laotian Prime Minister Sonexay Siphandone told the national parliament a year ago that the government considers fighting drugs a national priority.

According to a new report published last week by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC), the production and trafficking of drugs in the so-called “Golden Triangle”—where Laos borders Myanmar and Thailand—has significantly increased. The report highlighted an “explosive growth” in the synthetic drug trade in the region.
