Dutch national arrested in Kenya after fleeing child abuse conviction
A Dutch man convicted of child abuse in 2020 has been arrested in Kenya after fleeing the Netherlands to evade his sentence. The suspect, identified as Jan B., was sentenced in Limburg for sexually abusing two minors, aged 12 and 16. Dutch authorities have formally requested his extradition.
According to Dutch media outlet De Limburger, Jan B. was convicted in Limburg in 2020 for indecent acts with the two children. Following his conviction, the suspect managed to leave the Netherlands, eventually settling in Kenya. The circumstances of his escape remain unclear.
Kenyan authorities issued an arrest warrant for Jan B. approximately 10 days ago. Shortly after, he was apprehended in Nairobi. A spokesperson for the Kenyan Ministry of Justice confirmed that the arrest was made in cooperation with Dutch authorities.
“The Netherlands has requested his extradition so that he can serve his sentence,” said a Dutch government official. A Kenyan court is scheduled to rule on the extradition next week.
Details on how Dutch authorities located the fugitive have not been released. Similarly, it remains unknown why the extradition process took several years to initiate.
