Man, 74, sentenced to eight years in prison for fatal stabbing of his 82-year-old wife

The district court in Utrecht has sentenced a 74-year-old man from Amersfoort to eight years in prison for killing his 82-year-old wife. Peter L. stabbed the victim with a kitchen knife on June 11 last year in a house on the Keesomstraat, Amersfoort. After this, he tried to use the knife to commit suicide, but he survived the attempt.

L. lay on the bed after the incident. He called his GP when he awoke a day later. The man explained two weeks ago during the court hearing that his actions came out of desperation due to his wife suffering from rheumatism, which was causing her a great deal of pain.

The court convicted L. of manslaughter. There was no evidence to suggest that the killing was premeditated. The punishment is equal to the recommendation by the Public Prosecution Service (OM).

The court has taken into account that the man cannot be held wholly responsible for his actions when he committed the crime and needs treatment for several psychiatric issues. To ensure that L. does not commit another crime in the future, the court has also issued a behavioral and freedom-restricting measure. He also has to pay the victim’s son a damage compensation fee.

L. and the victim had been together for 46 years, and they had lived in the home in Amersfoort for 40 years. The two led a secluded life, and the house fell into disrepair.

The suspect was very dependent on his wife, information gathered during the hearing showed. He also suffered from anxiety and depression and was addicted to alcohol.
