Court remands suspect accused of rape during King's Day street party in Amsterdam
The man who was arrested after he was accused of rape in a viral video on King's Day in Amsterdam will remain in pre-trial detention for another 90 days, the district court in Amsterdam has reported. The suspect is an Italian citizen who lives in the city and was 27 years of age at the time of his arrest.
The council chamber decided on Monday that the suspect will remain imprisoned for a longer period of time, the court reported. The suspect was arrested on April 29, several days after a video in which a man was lying on top of a woman between cars on the Keizersgracht with his pants around his ankles had gone viral.
It was reported several days after the incident that the police were investigating the incident after the woman from the video had contacted the authorities to say that the sexual contact had happened without her consent, and she wished to press charges.
It was also reported by De Parool that they had obtained a video which showed several women kicking the man while he lay on top of the woman, while shouting for bystanders to help and call the police.
Police said that the suspect and victim knew each other before the alleged assault. Anyone who had the video has been urged to delete it and not share it with anyone. Police have said that this is a felony and can also be traumatizing for the victim.
