PSV confirms player stricken with tuberculosis; Footballer not identified

A player from PSV’s first team has been diagnosed with active tuberculosis, the club confirmed. The player, whose identity has not been disclosed, is receiving medical care and is in stable condition. While the risk of further infections is considered low, health authorities are said to be monitoring the situation closely.

The case has been reported to the GGD Brabant-Zuidoost, the regional public health service, which has launched a source and contact investigation. PSV’s medical staff, the treating pulmonologist, and the GGD have reportedly implemented all necessary precautions following standard health protocols. As of now, there are no indications that individuals in close contact with the infected player have contracted the disease.

Tuberculosis, caused by a bacterial infection, primarily affects the lungs and can spread through airborne transmission in its active form. However, experts emphasize that the risk of infection remains limited. The risk of transmission to those around the patient is low. There is no risk of infection in outdoor environments,” said Dr. Pascal Wielders, a pulmonologist with GGD Brabant-Zuidoost, in PSV’s statement.

It is not yet clear how this will affect PSV’s chances in the long run. Currently, the club is sitting in second place in the Eredivisie, the top professional league in the Netherlands. With 58 points, the Eindhoven club is six points behind Ajax with eight more matches left in the national competition.

The two teams are set to meet for a match in Eindhoven on Sunday afternoon. Neither club is participating in the upcoming Dutch Cup final. Further, PSV was knocked out of the Champions League about two weeks ago, and Ajax was eliminated from the Europa League a day later.
