Wilders shifts stance, backs Ukraine after Trump-Zelensky clash

PVV leader Geert Wilders has declared his support for Ukraine after initially withholding comment on the heated public dispute between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. The clash, which unfolded at the White House, drew strong reactions from Dutch political leaders, with most firmly siding with Ukraine.

Wilders initially responded cautiously, tweeting on Friday, "Fascinating TV, but not necessarily the best way to end the war, gentlemen." However, a day later, he clarified the PVV’s stance. "Of course, the PVV supports Ukraine and with conviction," he said.

Despite his backing for Ukraine, Wilders criticized harsh rhetoric against Trump, arguing that it would not bring peace closer. "No one benefits from hysterical anti-Trump sentiment. Without the U.S., there will be no peace, no security guarantees, nothing at all. It is in our interest to get the U.S. and Ukraine back on speaking terms at the negotiating table."

The PVV’s position on Ukraine has shifted since joining the Dutch government. Before taking part in the coalition, the party opposed aid to the country, which was invaded by Russia three years ago. Even now, the party’s stance remains inconsistent.

Several PVV members of the Tweede Kamer shared social media posts praising Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance’s aggressive remarks toward Zelensky. The retweets sparked backlash from politicians, including VVD vice faction leader Bente Becker. "I find this horrifying. This plays into Putin’s hands. Either this PVV member doesn’t understand that, which is concerning, or they do—and that’s even worse," Becker said.
