Trump-Zelensky clash sparks strong reactions in the Netherlands
Dutch political leaders have strongly condemned the explosive confrontation between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in the White House. The heated exchange, which unfolded in front of cameras, has sparked accusations of political blackmail and deepened concerns over Ukraine’s security amid Russia’s ongoing war.
Zelensky had traveled to Washington hoping to finalize a mineral resources deal, but the meeting ended abruptly. Trump, who has previously called Zelensky a “dictator,” accused him of being “ungrateful and disrespectful.” Vice President J.D. Vance backed Trump, telling Zelensky, “You should be thanking the president.”
Dutch officials, across party lines, have voiced outrage at the U.S. administration’s handling of the meeting and reaffirmed their unwavering support for Ukraine.
Former Dutch ambassador to Ukraine Robert Serry described the confrontation as “an American betrayal of Ukraine.” Speaking on the NOS radio program Met het Oog op Morgen, he said he was "shocked" by Trump and Vance’s treatment of Zelensky.
“I think it’s terrible what happened,” Serry said. “For Ukrainians, this will certainly feel like a betrayal.” He suggested Zelensky may have walked into a trap. “It seems like Zelensky was lured into this situation. He was torn apart by Trump and Vance, whom I would compare to pit bulls.”
VVD leader Dilan Yeşilgöz said she believes the confrontation was premeditated. “This was planned, I am convinced of that,” she said on Café Kockelmann. She called it “political extortion.”
“Zelensky sat there trying to stay composed because he knows what is at stake,” Yeşilgöz said.
Pieter Omtzigt (NSC) praised Zelensky for maintaining his composure. “It’s remarkable how President Zelensky, after three years of intense fighting for his country, continues to stand his ground in such an unreal and hostile setting.”
Rob Jetten (D66) called the incident a “new low.” “The man who has defended Ukraine with everything he has was blatantly insulted by Trump and Vance.”
Frans Timmermans (GroenLinks-PvdA) expressed admiration for Zelensky. “Today I saw someone honorably, bravely, and decently defend his country’s interests in the White House.”
ChristenUnie leader Mirjam Bikker stated, “President Zelensky stands courageously in the White House while his country fights for freedom and our shared values.”
CDA leader Henri Bontenbal found it “shocking” that the U.S. would treat Zelensky in this manner. “It is courageous how he stands up for his country’s future—a true example of moral leadership.”
Laurens Dassen (Volt) labeled the White House exchange a “shameful disgrace.”
Dutch Foreign Minister Caspar Veldkamp (NSC) spoke with Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andri Sybiha after the White House incident to reaffirm Dutch support.
“I just spoke with my dear Ukrainian friend and colleague,” Veldkamp wrote on X. “I repeated my full support for Ukraine—whatever it takes, for as long as it takes.”
Sybiha thanked the Netherlands for its solidarity, responding, “Good to speak with Caspar Veldkamp. Grateful for the support. Ukraine is not alone.”
Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans (VVD) echoed this sentiment: “We stand behind Ukraine, especially in difficult times.”
Prime Minister Dick Schoof also expressed his unwavering support for Ukraine. “The Netherlands stands firmly with Ukraine—especially now,” he posted on X.
“We seek a lasting peace and an end to Russia’s war of aggression. For Ukraine, for all its people, and for Europe.”
Trump posted on his platform Truth Social, saying Zelensky is unwilling to negotiate peace “if the United States is involved.”
Schoof indicated that he has spoken with Trump twice before his presidency and expects to speak with him again soon by phone.
PVV leader Geert Wilders reacted differently to the controversy, posting on X: “Fascinating television, but not necessarily the best way to end a war, gentlemen.”
