Man seriously injured after barbecue explosion in Stompetoren

A man sustained severe injuries early Sunday morning after a barbecue exploded in a shed behind his home on Buitenkruier in Stompetoren. When the man lit a cigarette inside the shed, a suspected gas explosion occurred, causing severe injuries. The explosion occurred around 7 a.m.

The barbecue had been used the previous evening during a party and was stored in the shed overnight. According to a police spokesperson, the device may have been leaking gas, or the gas valve was not properly closed.

Emergency services, including police, firefighters, two ambulances, and a trauma helicopter, were dispatched to the scene. Upon arrival, first responders found the victim already under a shower. The trauma team assisted with on-site treatment before the man was urgently transported to the hospital.

Despite the force of the explosion, the shed remained standing. Nearby residents reported hearing the blast. Authorities stated there is no ongoing investigation as no criminal activity is suspected.
