Eindhoven planning on purchasing Brainport high-tech campus from British company
The municipality of Eindhoven wants to take over Brainport Industries Campus (BIC) from the current owners. This campus houses various high-tech companies and educational institutions. The purchase, which the municipality thinks has the opportunity to “ensure better management of the development of the BIC,” still needs to be brought to the City Council.
The deal is for BIC 1, where around 2,000 people are employed. The existing building of approximately 105,000 square meters, the public space around the building, and a parking garage are included in the purchase agreement. The amount of money involved in the deal has not been released.
The campus is currently owned by Capreon, a British investment company that offered to sell it to the municipality last summer. Negotiations about the purchase have been ongoing for months and have now led to a purchase agreement.
BIC 2 will be developed over the coming years. This campus will be twice as large as BIC 1, with 225,000 square meters. Furthermore, the expansion of ASML is being taken into account on the northern part of the site. The microchip machine manufacturer announced last year that it wanted to have a branch at the BIC in 2030 with capacity for thousands of employees.
“Becoming the owner of BIC 1 is of strategic importance. In this way, we can further strengthen our regional innovation-eco system,” said Alderman for Brainport and Economy, Stijn Steenbakkers. “Continuing to build on a powerful and sustainable future for Eindhoven and the whole Brainport region will require a progressive government that dares to take positions and make real choices. The purchase of BIC 1 is a unique chance that we want to take with both hands.”
