Foul smell: Passengers unwell on KLM flight from Canada met by paramedics in Amsterdam

Fire trucks and multiple ambulances met a KLM flight as it landed at Schiphol Airport on Wednesday morning because several passengers had become unwell. There were also reports of a strange smell. The affected travelers had minor symptoms, according to ANP.

Flight KL 676 from Edmonton, Canada, landed at Schiphol Airport at around 9:15 a.m. on Wednesday. Passengers reported feeling ill shortly before the landing and a strange smell was detected, a KLM spokesperson told Hart van Nederland.

According to ANP, paramedics checked the affected passengers at the scene. None of those who became unwell on the flight required hospitalization.

Authorities were first dispatched to the Buitenveldertbaan, the runway at Schiphol which crosses the A4 motorway. First responders were sent to the eastern part of the runway just after 9 a.m. as a precaution, and the incident was soon scaled up to a Grip 1 regional emergency.

“This was reported in accordance with procedure and the emergency services were present at the landing as a precaution,” the spokesperson said. “An initial check did not reveal any irregularities. An investigation must reveal where the smell came from.”

The Grip 1 alarm was cancelled soon after the flight arrived at the airport. The Grip 1 protocol calls for all responding emergency services workers to act under a single incident commander.
