Sint Maarten, Sint Eustatius, Saba bracing for tropical storm Ernesto

Sint Maarten, Saba, and Sint Eustatius are bracing for tropical storm Ernesto, set to pass the Kingdom of the Netherlands islands in the Caribbean on Tuesday evening, local time. All schools and government services on the islands are closed on Tuesday and Wednesday.

According to the Meteorological Department of Sint Maarten, Ernesto will pass near the islands on Tuesday evening, local time. It could mean very rough seas, heavy downpours and associated flooding, thunderstorms, and possible tropical storm-force winds.

The meteorological institute warned attractions along the coast to take the necessary precautions to “preserve life and property.” Small craft and swimmers are advised to avoid open waters. “Residents and users of areas prone to flooding and rockslides should exercise caution.”

Prime Minister Luc Mercelina of Sint Maarten gave a national address on Monday evening to ensure that the island's residents and visitors were aware of the approaching storm.

The local government ordered all businesses to close their doors at 11:00 p.m. on Monday and remain closed until Wednesday. Pharmacies, medical centers, hotels, and guesthouses were exempted.

The airport will close at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday and will only reopen on Thursday morning at the earliest.

The Prime Minister also asked political parties to remove their election signs, posters, and billboards before the storm to avoid them blowing loose and causing injuries or damage. The island will hold elections on August 19.

Saba and Sint Eustatius’s authorities have also issued warnings.
