Week of speeding tickets:Netherlands participating in EU week of extra speed controls

Road users beware. This week, police will be conducting extra speed checks throughout Europe, including in the Netherlands. The week of speeding fines is an initiative of Roadpol and is intended to reduce the number of fatal traffic accidents.

Around 29 countries are participating in the collaboration this year, including the Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Spain, Turkey, and Italy.

The ultimate goal is zero deaths on European roads, a spokesperson for the National Police told ANP. “That is, unfortunately, a utopia, but we do want to remind people to pay close attention to their speed.”

The exact way the extra speed controls will work in the Netherlands will differ per police unit. “Sometimes, with extra speed cameras, sometimes by addressing people about their driving behavior. Information is also very important.”
