Video: Several buses destroyed in fire at Arriva building in Maastricht
A large fire in a building in Maastricht destroyed several Arriva buses overnight. Employees managed to get multiple buses out of the burning building, but a number were lost, the regional broadcaster L1 reported.
The fire in the building on Korvetweg broke out around midnight, Veiligheidsregio Zuid-Limburg, the office that covers the local emergency services, said on X. Firefighters responded and quickly escalated the situation to a very large fire.
At 00:56 a.m., the Veiligheidsregio reported that the authorities escalated the situation to a GRIP 1, which means that the various emergency services on site all work together and report to a single commanding officer.
Firefighters had the fire under control by 2:18 a.m. The blaze released a lot of smoke. The fire department did measurements in the area to make sure no dangerous substances were released in the fire, but found nothing alarming, the Veiligheidsregio said.
The building belongs to Arriva. The cause of the fire is not yet clear. It is also unclear how many buses the public transport company lost.
