More hot weather expected after first official “tropical” day this year
More hot weather is expected on Thursday in the Netherlands, with Wednesday confirmed as the first nationwide tropical day. Temperatures will reach 30 degrees Celsius in certain areas of the country, according to meteorological office KNMI.
The KNMI defines “tropical” as when the temperature reaches 30.0 degrees. The day is considered a summertime day when the thermometer rises to 25.0 degrees.
Some clouds are also to be expected on Thursday. The northwest of the country will experience temperatures up to 26 degrees, and the east will see temperatures touch 30 degrees.
Although event organizers have been concerned about how people will react to the heat on Thursday, the KNMI has not issued a weather warning. People have been cautioned that although the weather is tropical, the natural waterways, lakes and ponds are still cold. The sudden temperature change can cause shock for swimmers, as well as cramping and other difficulties.
National weather records are set in De Bilt, Utrecht, home to the KNMI. The town is considered to be the country's meteorological average.
