Poland's star player, Robert Lewandowski, will miss the match against the Netherlands
Poland's star player, Robert Lewandowski, will miss the match against the Netherlands at the European Championships, the Polish Football Association reported. The attacker suffered a muscle tear in Monday's 2-1 friendly win against Turkey.
"We are doing everything to ensure Robert can play in the second match against Austria," manager Michal Probierz explained. The striker left the field in the first half against Turkey shortly after another Poland attacker, Karol Swiderski, had already gotten injured while celebrating a goal.
Swiderski and Pawel Dawidowicz, who also did not emerge from the match unscathed, were checked on by doctors a day later. "Dawidowicz has a pulled thigh muscle. In Swiderski's case, the research showed a sprain of the ankle joint without significant damage," the team doctor shared in an update on X. "Both players should be able to train within three to four days with treatment."
In addition to Lewandowski, Poland will also be missing striker Arkediusz Milik against the Netherlands. The ex-Ajax player was injured in the friendly against Ukraine on Friday and will miss the entire tournament.
The Netherlands and Poland play their first match at the European Championship on Sunday in Hamburg. France and Austria are the other countries in their group.
