Quincy Promes released from custody in Dubai
Footballer Quincy Promes has been released from custody, under certain conditions, in Dubai, sources told Parool. The former Ajax player is awaiting a ruling on whether or not he’ll be extradited to the Netherlands.
Dutch courts convicted Promes in absentia in two cases. In February, he was sentenced to six years in prison for cocaine trafficking. And last year, the court sentenced him to 1.5 years in prison for stabbing his cousin in the leg at a party. Promes appealed against both convictions.
In March, the authorities in Dubai detained Promes as he was about to return to Russia after a training camp with his club Spartak Moscow. His driver had caused damage to a rental car, allegedly in a hit-and-run incident, and because that incident was still under investigation, Promes was not allowed to leave Dubai. The Netherlands asked Dubai to extradite Promes after hearing about his arrest, according to the newspaper.
Parool’s sources said that Dubai released Promes on conditions while he awaits the ruling on his extradition case. The sources did not know what exactly the conditions entailed, but in general, persons released on conditions in Dubai are not allowed to leave the country. They typically also have to pay a deposit, report periodically to the authorities, and respond to every call from the authorities.
