Escaped prisoner convicted of assaulting his Amsterdam social worker, threatening doctor
The suspect's name and photograph were redacted after he was caught in the Czech Republic three weeks after his escape.
The 33-year-old man who escaped from a psychiatric prison in Groningen last week was convicted in 2020 of assaulting and threatening his doctor and social worker. The attacks happened in 2015, but Mouloud M. could only be tried in 2020 because he was in custody in Germany before that. The reason for his detention there is unknown, AD reports.
On Wednesday, the police released M.’s full name and photo, asking the public to help keep an eye out for the man. He escaped while on supervised leave from the Van Mesdag clinic in Groningen last week Wednesday. "Mouloud M. urgently needs medication for psychotic behavior," police said.
M. has an extensive criminal record and has been in frequent contact with the Dutch police, judiciary, and healthcare institutions. In 2020, he was convicted of aggravated assault for attacking a social worker in Amsterdam and threatening to kill his treating doctor in Altrecht, a mental health institution in Utrecht.
According to AD, in the Utrecht clinic, M. shouted things like “if he comes again tomorrow, I will kill him” and “I am going to visit you in Amersfoort at your house. You’re going to be scared, especially you.”
To his Amsterdam social worker, M. said things like, “I will kill you” and “let me go, and we will fight man against man.” He punched the social worker multiple times in the face, causing serious injuries.
In both cases, the court sentenced him to institutionalized psychiatric treatment.
The Dutch authorities are very concerned about M.'s current mental state. If he does not take his medication, he can become a danger to himself or those around him. The police warned people not to approach him themselves, but to call the emergency number 1-1-2 if they saw him.
