Michael P., the man suspected of murdering 25-year-old Anne Faber, followed a gardeners course at a night school in Houten and was allowed to leave the Altrecht psychiatric institution in Den Dolder to attend classes, the Telegraaf reports. According to the newspaper, the school, Wellant College, knew nothing of his background.

P. was admitted to the institution in Den Dolder as the last part of a long prison sentence he got for raping two teenage girls in Nijkerk. The clinic was preparing him for a gradual return to society.

The Altrecht psychiatric institution in Den Dolder promised to release an overview of the patients currently in the clinic within the next few days. The overview will show what percentage of the patients are serving prison sentences of which length, but not specifically what they were sentenced for. The association for law breakers BWO is against this plan and filed summary proceedings to try and stop it, RTV Utrecht reports.

Disturbed people who pose a threat to themselves or others are more often sent directly for treatment, instead of ending up in a police cell. In 30 percent of the cases the person is taken directly to a mental health institution, Henk van Dijk, chairman of the national platform mental health at the police, said to the Volkskrant on Monday.
