Motorists warned to be careful as snow continues to fall in NL
Continued snowfall could cause extra traffic and dangerous driving conditions due to icy roads in the Netherlands this morning. Meteorological institute KNMI has a code yellow icy roads warning in place for all provinces except Friesland, the Wadden Islands, Groningen, Zeeland, and Limburg. There is also a code yellow warning for strong winds along the west coast and in the IJsselmeer area.
Snow will continue to fall in the west, center, and south of the country this morning. Later in the morning, the snow will leave the Netherlands to the south. After that, the iciness on the roads should melt away. The icy roads warning is in effect until 10:00 a.m.
Public works department Rijkswaterstaat deployed 577 gritters and 630 snowplows to keep the roads as clear as possible. By around 6 a.m. on Friday morning, the gritters already sprinkled 6 million kilograms of salt on the roads.
The Rijkswaterstaat doesn't expect the snow to cause overmuch problems on the road this morning. Travelers' association ANWB warned road users to be alert due to the iciness on the roads. At 7:15 a.m., it reported 15 traffic jams covering 40 kilometers of Dutch roads.
