Dutch man, 54, dies in Venice speedboat accident

A Dutch man was one of three people killed in a speedboat accident in Venice. The speedboat crashed into a dam. Three of the four people on board were killed. The fourth was taken to hospital. The Dutch victim is 54-year-old motorboat technician Erik Hoorn, his brother confirmed to NOS.

The accident happened at around 9:05 p.m. on Tuesday, local time, according to the local fire department Vigili del Fuoco.

Hoorn was on the team of his friend and power boat pilot Fabio Buzzi. The team wanted to break their own speed record for the trip from Monaco to Venice by boat, but their boat hit a dam shortly before arriving in the Italian city. Hoorn, who lived in Switzerland, helped the 76-year-old Buzzi develop boat engines, according to his brother.

The accident left Hoorn, Buzzi and another Italian crew member dead. The fourth crew member survived the crash.
