Woman and child, 9, attacked with hammer on Steenbergen street

A man assaulted a woman and her 9-year-old son with a hammer on a Steenbergen street. He also threatened the woman with a knife and kicked her 3-year-old son. A 44-year-old man from Kruiningen was arrested, RTL Nieuws report.

The incident happened at around 8:20 p.m. on Friday. The woman and the older boy were both hit on the head with a hammer. Bystanders tried to overpower the man, but he managed to escape. He was later arrested in his Kruiningen home.

The reason for the assault is unclear. The woman told the police that she does not know her attacker. She pressed charges of attempted murder against him.

The woman and her two children were checked over at a doctor's office. The severity of their injuries is not clear.

The suspect is in custody for questioning.
