Death threats aimed at Vlaardingen mayor
Mayor Annemiek Jetten of Vlaardingen received multiple threats, including death threats. The mayor filed six police reports at the end of last year - four times for insult, two times for threats, RTV Rijnmond reports.
Why the mayor was threatened, and by whom, is still under investigation. The threats may be connected to the decision to ban traditional New Year's fires in the municipality, according to the broadcaster. This decision resulted in a flood of criticism on the city government, and the mayor specifically.
The police are investigating two threats against Jetten. One unknown person threatened to gun her down. Another threat said: "If we can put the mayor out to pasture, we will not let it go".
Investigators are also looking at five suspects in connection with insults on social media. Two of them will appear in court later this month, according to the broadcaster. On Facebook, one person called Jetten a "dirty stink-arrogant cunt-mayor", and another person said they hoped Jetten would choke on her Christmas dinner.
