'Yellow vests' activist arrested for incitement

The police arrested a "Yellow Vests" activist in Maastricht on Thursday for incitement. The detainee is the same man who was arrested for disrupting public order during a Yellow Vests demonstration in Maastricht on Saturday, the police confirmed to NU.nl.

A spokesperson for the Yellow Vests told the newspaper the the police are trying to get the genie back in the bottle with this arrest. According to him, the arrested activist has always been peaceful.

On Saturday a group of about 50 people in yellow vests gathered near the MVV football stadium for an unannounced demonstration. The activists tried to reach the A2 with the aim of blocking the highway, but were stopped by the police three times, according to the newspaper.

The group then disbanded, taking off their yellow vests, but gathered again in the center of the city. Eventually the group went to a police station to demand the release of the arrested man and the return of a confiscated camera. When the police refused, the demonstration was terminated.

This Saturday the Yellow Vests will again demonstrate in Maastricht. A demonstration is also planned for Amsterdam on Saturday.
