Knife-waving man shot by police in Zuid-Holland town

The police shot a man on Verdilaan in Naaldwijk on Monday evening. The man was waving a knife and shouting at bystanders at a supermarket, a police spokesperson said to AD. The man was taken to hospital in unknown condition.

The incident happened at an Albert Heijn supermarket. The man would not listen to police instructions. To get him under control, the police had to shoot at him multiple times, the spokesperson said to the newspaper. A police dog was also used.

A trauma helicopter was deployed to help the injured man. He was rushed to hospital.

Bystanders told AD that the man was shouting 'allahu akbar', but the police and Public Prosecutor have not confirmed this.

The Rijksrecherche, the department that handles internal investigations at government services like the police, will investigate the shooting. This is standard procedure whenever a police officer fires his or her service weapon.
