Container ship crashes into Gouda rail bridge; train traffic disrupted
A container ship crashed into a railway bridge in Gouda on Sunday. The accident halted train traffic between Gouda and Boskoop on Sunday, and fewer trains will run on this route on Monday, NS reports. The rail company hopes that train traffic will return to normal by 6:30 p.m.
The bridge shifted on its foundation due to the accident, and the safety net is visibly torn. "The bridge is damaged to such an extent that specialized technicians have to take measurements", ProRail said on Sunday.
The accident happened around 6:50 p.m. on Sunday, according to NU.nl. The police are investigating how it happened.
On Monday trains will run from Alphen aan den Rijn to Boskoop only. From there, travelers can make use of buses between Waddinxveen Triangel, Waddinxveen, Boskoop Snijdelwijk and Boskoop.
"This is very bad luck", ProRail spokesperson Mercedes Grootscholten said to newspaper AD. "Thew work was completed, well in time. And then a container ship crashed into the bridge."
