Mother abandons baby after being caught shoplifting

A mother abandoned her 5 month old baby in a shopping center in Schiedam on Tuesday after she was caught shoplifting. Staff at De Nieuwe Passage shopping center saw her shoplifting and she left the baby behind when she tried to flee, RTV Rijnmond reports.

The baby's grandmother was also at the store. She tried to flee with another child, a toddler. The mother was arrested.

Both children were taken to a police station, where officers cared for them while youth care was called in. A police officer changed the baby's diaper and gave the child a bottle while other officers entertained the toddler.
