Thunderstorms, strong winds to hit Netherlands this afternoon; code yellow warning triggered

A stormy afternoon is ahead for the Netherlands today. Meteorological institute KNMI issued a code yellow weather warning, warning of thunderstorms and strong winds starting along the southwestern coast around noon.

Not all of the Netherlands will contend with both storms and winds, some provinces can look forward to only thunderstorms and others to only wind. Either way, the weather is expected to be unpleasant.

The strong winds will start in Zeeland around noon and spread northwards across the country. Gusts of up to 95 kilometers per hour can be expected along the coast. Only Utrecht, Gelderland, Overijssel, Drenthe and Groningen don't have to worry about overly strong winds today.

The thunderstorms are also expected to start around noon. A code yellow storm warning is in effect for the entire country, except for Zeeland, Zuid-Holland and Noord-Holland. The thunderstorms may be accompanied by lightning. "Traffic and outside activities may be hindered. Avoid open waters and open areas, don't shelter under trees. Follow weather reports and warnings", the KNMI warns.

Temperature wise today will be cool. Afternoon temperatures will range from around 14 degrees in the southwest to 21 degrees in the northeast.
