Cop nearly strangled by rowdy bar flies; One held for attempted murder

A police officer was nearly strangled by a group of intoxicated party-goers in Zutphen during the early hours of Sunday morning. A 22-year-old man from Bronkhorst was arrested for attempted murder, the Zutphen police said in a statement on Facebook.

The police responded to Schupstoel around 3:30 a.m. after reports of a fight. A 24-year-old man tried to run away from the police. Officers caught up to him on Zaadmarkt and arrested him. The man resisted and some friends came to help him.

The 22-year-old detainee attacked an officer and started strangling him. Colleagues managed to get the man off the officer just before he lost consciousness. The young man was arrested for attempted murder.

In the commotion, the 24-year-old man managed to get away. The police know who he is, however, and expect to arrest him in short order
