Trucker blocks Dutch highway to protect baby on road
A 10-month-old baby was flung out of her mother's car and onto the road in an accident on the A58 highway on Tuesday afternoon. A trucker blocked the highway to protect the girl from oncoming traffic. Both baby and her 29-year-old mother survived the accident, though the extent of their injuries is unknown.
The 29-year-old woman from Tilburg hit the guard rail for unknown reasons and the car rolled, NOS reports. The baby was flung out of the car, car seat and all.
The truck driver was right behind the car when the accident happened. According to a colleague, he is very shaken up. "He was five meters behind the car and saw the car hit the rail and roll. After the crash the mother was behind the car and the baby behind her", he said to Omroep Brabant. "He had to slam the brakes with a full cargo. You hope to never have to experience that." The company made sure the trucker received the support he needed.
The trucker blocked the road until emergency services arrived. Bystanders gave first aid to the baby girl and her mother. Both were transported to the hospital. The mother was able to give te police a statement about what happened.
