Arnhem hostage taker has grudge against government: Prosecutor

The 57-year-old man who held two people hostage for several hours in Arnhem last week, has a deep resentment towards the government, the Public Prosecutor announced based on the initial results of the investigation against him. Why he is angry at the government was not revealed, ANP reports.

Investigators questioned the Arnhem man, victims and witnesses. They also looked at a letter and DVD's that the man gave hostages to deliver to the police. The man will be arraigned on Tuesday.

On Wednesday afternoon last week the Arnhem man stepped into a district center in Klarendal in Arnhem and took two people hostage. Two other people were released immediately with instructions to take a letter to the police. The man was armed with a firearm and bomb vest, which later turned out to be fake. He also had several real knives with him.

After three hours of negotiations, the police finally arrested the man. He was arrested wearing only his underwear - the SWAT team instructed him to undress to make sure he had no hidden weapons.
