Eighteen arrested in Rotterdam after Feyenoord lost to Ajax

The Rotterdam police arrested 18 people during and after a match between Feyenoord and Ajax on Sunday. They were arrested on suspicion of crimes including insult, threats, vandalism and throwing fireworks, a spokesperson for the police told RTL Nieuws. Ajax won the match in the Amsterdam ArenA 2-1.

Feyenoord supporters followed the match on big screens on and around the square in Rotterdam. The police and riot police intervened several times after officers, journalists and camera crews were pelted with beer, stones, fireworks and other objects.

"Through the deployment of police on horseback, the riot police and a water cannon kept on hand, the case was nipped in the bud", the police said, according to RTL. "Disappointment on the final result is understandable, but it is absurd that something like this ends in throwing fireworks and other issues. That is unacceptable."
