One dead, one hurt in Limburg retirement complex fire

One person was killed and another slightly injured in a fire in a seniors' apartment building in Landgraaf, Limburg on Wednesday night, De Limburger reports.

The fire started around 11:30 p.m. on the third floor of the complex on Kerkstraat. Firefighters responded en masse, including departments from Germany, according to the newspaper.

Around midnight the fire department decided to evacuate the complex. Residents of the 48 apartments were given shelter in a nearby building. The fire was under control around 1:00 a.m.

The fire started in the home of the person who died. According to De Limburger, the apartment is completely destroyed. Some other apartments sustained water damage.

According to L1 reporter Frank Moonen on Twitter, residents could return to their homes around 7:00 a.m. on Thursday morning.

The cause of the fire is still unknown.
