Hotel butler caught swapping guests' diamonds with fakes

A butler at Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin in Noordwijk robbed hotel guests of their jewelry for years. The hotel worker stole hundreds of thousands of euros in jewels by swapping diamonds and gems with fakes, the Telegraaf reports. Hotel guests regularly gave the butler, Marcel J., jewelry to have cleaned at a jeweler. Once he had the jewelry in his possession, he took out the gems and diamonds and replaced them with fakes, according to the newspaper. J. did this for years without anyone noticing anything. He was finally caught when an observant jeweler in Amsterdam recognized an exclusive jewel J. was trying to sell. The jeweler contacted the last known buyer and an investigation was launched. The hotel management confirmed the story to the Telegraaf, adding that the butler was dismissed. The Public Prosecutor confirmed that Marcel J. was arrested, but made no further statements.
