Dutch King calls for Security Council seat, MH17 justice (full speech text)
Dutch King Willem-Alexander addressed the United Nations General Assembly in New Yorkby highlighting seventy years of the Netherlands work with the UN on achievements that have helped shape and improve today's world. In a speech where he strongly advocated for the Netherlands to get a seat on the UN Security Council, he also called upon all the nations of the world to show solidarity in the face of the current refugee crisis, noting that the Netherlands has again increased its contribution to humanitarian assistance making it one of the world’s largest donors.
The Kingdom of the Netherlands sees the United Nations primary goals of peace, justice and development as well as its fundamentals laid down in the UN Charter, to be in alignment with those of its own, and is the reason for the candidacy for the no-permanent seat in the Security Council. King Willem-Alexander called for a ‘3D-approach’, the combination of defence, development and diplomacy, to combat the evils of exclusion and discrimination of which the Netherlands has many years experience.
He also brought up the downing of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17 saying that they eagerly await the results of Security Council Resolution 2166, and the Dutch government will work tirelessly, on this regard until justice is done. He added that the Security Council needs to act more boldly in the face of large-scale atrocities calling for greater restraint in the use of vetos, welcoming France's initiative in this regard.
His speech on Monday lauded the halving of extreme poverty and child mortality rates, giving 2.3 billion more people access to drinking water, beating back diseases such as Malaria and Tuberculosis, and peace operations meant to bring violent conflicts under control. The King also thanked the UN for its seventy years of battling against cynicism and fatalism.
The Kingdom of the Netherlands is passionate about serving the international community at a UN level as a partner in peace, justice and development, he said. A solemn task which they hope to fulfil together, with all the nations of the world.
