Arson suspected in supermarket fire
The police are investigating two fires at supermarkets in The Hague and Rijswijk on Sunday afternoon. Investigating officers are assuming arson was involved in both fires.
The first fire happened around 12:40 p.m. at the Jumbo supermarket on Laakweg in The Hague. Officers spoke to a number of witnesses, but would like to make contact with any witnesses who have not spoken to them yet. Statements from bystanders indicated that a number of people took photos and videos just before, during and immediately after the fire. "These images may be of great importance to the investigation and therefore the police would like to get possession of this", according to the police website.
Jumbo supermarkets have been the target of an extortionist over the past months. The extortionist has planted explosives at several Jumbo supermarkets in Groningen and Zwolle and is demanding an amount in Bitcoins before he will stop. So far the police have not linked this latest fire to the extortionist.
The second fire happened at an Albert Heijn supermarket on Bogaardplein in Rijswijk just after 1:00 p.m. Here too the police believe that arson was involved. The police would like to make contact with any witnesses.
