Police questioning 52-year-old over Amsterdam blast
The police have taken a 52 year old Amsterdam resident into custody for questioning in connection with the explosion in Staatsliedenbuurt early on Wednesday morning.
The explosion happened around 05:00 a.m. on Fannius Scholtenstraat. No one was injured, but three parked cars, a number of bicycles, and several homes were damaged. The police closed off the area for a trace evidence investigation.
Witnesses saw a car driving away from the scene shortly after the explosion. The police tracked the vehicle down in Amsterdam central and towed it away for further investigation. The owner of the car - the 52 year old man - was taken in for questioning. The police are trying to determine whether he played a role in the explosion.
At this stage it is not yet clear who is responsible for the explosion. The neighborhood investigation revealed that a loud bang was heard around 4:00 a.m., an hour before the explosion. The police are investigating a possible connection.
