German couple robbed of €200k in Amsterdam hotel
A German couple was robbed of 200 thousand euros in a hotel in Amsterdam in a home sale deal gone wrong.
The German couple had two properties for sale in Germany. According to the police, a man from Amsterdam, calling himself "Anton van Beck", responded to the couple by email saying that his friend "Sharouk Ambani" was interested in the properties. This led to a meeting between the couple and Ambani in Germany.
Ambani indicated that he wanted to buy the properties. The couple agreed to meet Ambani in Amsterdam in mid-February. Ambani asked that they do the transaction in cash. He offered to pay 50 thousand euros more for the two properties, if the Germins were willing to exchange 200 thousand euros in large denominations with him for 200 thousand euros in smaller bills. As Ambani was a neat looking man and offered to pay more for the houses, the couple agreed.
They arrange to exchange the 200 thousand euros and receive a down payment on the properties on February 26th at the Holiday Inn hotel in Amsterdam Zuidoost. On the day of the meeting, one of the Germans remained in the car and the other went into the hotel to meet Ambani. During the meeting Ambani snatched the suitcase of money from the German man, ran to a dark Mercedes with German license plates and fled.
The surveillance cameras managed to catch the scammer who calls himself Ambani on tape. The police would like to come into contact with anyone who recognizes this man.
