Update: White heroin dealer arrested in Amsterdam

With reporting by Zack Newmark Update, 10:30 a.m., 7 April 2015: new information about the arrest Update, 11:05 a.m., 7 April 2015: the suspect is currently implicated in only the case from February 2015 A drug dealer suspected of distributing white heroine as cocaine in Amsterdam earlier this year was arrested by police in the capital city over the weekend. The man turned himself in on Saturday at about 7:30 a.m., police said Tuesday. The man volunteered himself to an Amsterdam police station after seeing images of the suspected dealer broadcast on television. His lawyer states that he did not know that he was selling white heroin, according to Telegraaf. At the moment, he is only implicated in selling drugs that sent three Danish tourists to the hospital in February, a police spokesman told NL Times. "For now, it is just the Danish victims," he said, but links to previous cases are also under consideration. "The investigation will find out if he's connected to the earlier cases." He was held in solitary confinement since the arrest, and interrogated over the weekend, police said. He will be brought in front of a magistrate on Tuesday to determine if he will be detained for a longer period of time. "He may be the one who sold white heroin to tourists that he said was cocaine," police said in a statement. "In recent months, twenty tourists fell ill, of which three are deceased," they said. Late last year three British tourists died after using what they thought was cocaine. Forensic tests later proved that it was in fact white heroin. A British inquest recently confirmed that two of them, two friends visiting Amsterdam to celebrate a 21st birthday, died of drug related causes. At least 17 other tourists were injured and had to be treated in hospital. The police launched a major manhunt for those responsible for distributing fake cocaine, involving a large-scale investigation team consisting of 20 detectives. They also offered a 15 thousand euro reward for the tip that leads to an arrest. The city of Amsterdam also organized a highly visible campaign warning tourists about the fake cocaine with signs, leaflets, and low-cost drug testing kits
