Johan Cruijff rips Ronaldo Golden Ball selection
Former Dutch footballer and manager Johan Cruijff sees Cristiano Ronaldo's Golden Ball Award as an unfair reward for the Portuguese talent. He feels that Ronaldo did not play as good as Toni Kroos for example, and did not deserve the trophy for best player of the year."It is incomprehensible that a player who has played outstanding football and won the most games has not been selected", Cruijff writes in his column for De Telegraaf on Monday.
It is not the first time Cruijff is disappointed by FIFA's choice.
"Two years ago Bayern Munich won virtually everything, but the prize did not go to Kroos or any other Bayern player. It should be clear that I do not agree with FIFA's selection."
Kroos debuted in Bayern Munich in 2007 and played for the team until the summer of 2014 when he was sold to Real Madrid. He has played for the Germany national team since 2010 including the FIFA World Cups 2010 and 2014.
Kroos played for the German national team which won the FIFA World Cup last year. Cruijff says he is amazed how Kroos was not even nominated this year and the winner is a player who was "almost invisible" during the world cup.
Cristiano Ronaldo has been the star forward for Real Madrid since 2009 and has won the UEFA Champion's League once for Manchester United and once for Real Madrid. He is also the captain for the Portugal national team.
Cruijff himself has won the Golden Ball award three times in the years 1971, 1973 and 1974, before the award was chosen by the FIFA organization.
