Hospital hacker gets prison time

The court in the Hague sentenced the 28 year old Jordy de J. from Nieuwerkerk to 12 months in prison, 8 of which are probationary. He was found guilty of hacking into the Groene Hart Hospital's (Gouda) computer in September 2012 and of possessing child pornography. De J. was also sentenced to 240 hours of community service and has to receive obligatory treatment during his extra long probationary period of three years. De J. was able to take over data on one of the hospital's servers by using credentials he obtained through hacking. According to De J., he wanted to contribute to the protection of confidential data and the debate about it by making his hacking practices public through a journalist. According to the court however, he acted improperly by repeatedly logging in and searching for sensitive information. The court also found evidence that De J. has made a habit of possessing child pornography. Police found thousands of child pornography pictures on his computer. Over 2 thousand images contained sexual acts with children between the ages of 4 and 9 years. "I am an ethical hacker", De J. said in court two weeks ago. "It was my intention to test how serious the data breach was. I wanted to report an abuse. I was shocked at how easy it was to break the password." After he cracked the password of the hospitals outdated computer, he downloaded the information of half a million patients. He also obtained 47 patient's medical records.
