Baby found in underground garbage bin "stable"

A newborn baby was rescued from an underground garbage container overnight after someone walked by the bin and heard the girl crying. Paramedics, firefighters and police raced to the Fritz Conijnstraat in the Slotermeer district of Amsterdam at about 4:15 a.m. and found the days-old child upset, but in otherwise fair condition. “A witness on the Fritz Conijnstraat heard crying sounds coming from an underground rubbish bin and alerted the police,” a police department press release states. “Police officers reasoned that a baby had to be lying in the container, firemen rescued her from the perilous position, and handed her over to the care of the alerted ambulance personnel.” The baby was admitted to an area hospital for observation. Police say she is "stable." Police in Amsterdam Nieuw-West have begun a criminal investigation, and are asking for witnesses who saw anything strange to step forward and contact them. They have removed the rubbish bin, which will be examined for trace evidence.
