Joran van der Sloot starts hunger strike

Joran van der Sloot has gone on a hunger strike because of his transfer to another prison in Peru. Guards found a mobile phone in his possession. According to NOS, Van der Sloot's attorney is worried about his health and has requested that he be examined by a doctor. Since last weekend Van der Sloot has been jailed in the Challapalcagevangenis, high up in the Andes and far away from civilization. The Challapalcagevangenis is hardly accessible to visitors like family, attorneys or doctors. The prison was closed in 2005 due to international pressure, but was opened again in 2007. Human rights organizations like Amnesty International wants Peru to close the prison for good. Van der Sloot was first imprisoned in Lima where he married his girlfriend Leidy Figueroa, they are expecting a child in September. Van der Sloot was convicted in 2012 for the murder of student Stephany Flores in 2010. He was sentenced to 28 years in prison. According to NOS, Peru has stated that Van der Sloot will be extradited to the United States as soon as he has served his sentence. Van der Sloot is wanted in the USA for being linked to the disappearance of Natalee Holloway in 2005.
