One million Dutch choose Netflix

A massive one million Dutch people are estimated to use a paid Netflix subscription for watching video online. A survey of 6,600 people found that seven percent had access to a paid Netflix account. The survey, published by Telecompaper, suggests a near doubling of Netflix subscription figures for the final quarter of 2013, which was 4 percent. A spokesman from Telecompaper confirms that these figures are not only the number of people with a paid Netflix subscription, Nu.nl reported. It includes everyone using the service, such as partners, children and family members. The exact number of Dutch Netflix subscribers is not known. According to the latest quarterly figures from Netflix, they have 13.8 million paying members outside of the United States of America. Specific numbers by country were not reported. The increase in figures can be attributed to brand awareness, says the Telecompaper spokesperson. 81 percent of participants in the survey indicated that they know about Netflix, compared to only 71 percent a year ago. Despite rival Pathé Thuis having as much name recognition as Netflix, only about three percent of people in the Netherlands say they might use the service, Nu.nl wrote. According to the survey the preferred device for using Netflix is a laptop, with 40 percent of participants stating that they watch Netflix on a laptop. 37 percent use a television which is connected to another device, like a computer or a gaming console and 31 percent prefer a tablet or smart TV.
