Fugitive robber arrested

A police arrest unit has caught a man in Amsterdam West who, since committing a daring daylight robbery in 2011, has been on the run from justice.

The 23-year-old man was filmed with a phone camera on May 18 2011 as he was running away after he and a friend robbed a jewelry store in the Shoperade at Osdorp plein.

One of them was caught by bystanders, but the other opened fire on a security guard and managed to get away. One bullet his the security guard in his arm and another got stuck in a wallet he was carrying in his chest pocket.

Police were able to identify the fugitive from footage someone shot of him with a phone camera. He was sentenced, appealed and then eventually got eight years in prison on April 14 2014, but managed to evade recapture until Wednesday night when the SWAT team nabbed him.
