Rijksmuseum Obtains Jan Mostaert’s Painting
Rijksmuseum got hold of "Landscape with an Episode from the Conquest of America," a famous painting by Jan Mostaert (c. 1535).
The painting's acquisition was supported by VSBfonds, BankGiro Loterij, the Mondriaan Fonds and the Nationaal Aankoopfonds of the Ministry of Education, the Rembrandt Association and the National Art Collections Fund, Culture and Science, and the SNS REAAL Fonds and Jacques Goudstikker’s relatives. Vereniging Rembrandt’s early involvement in funding has helped a lot in obtaining the art piece.

Goodness Shamrock/Wikimedia Commons The painting has been recognized as the first panel painting that features a visionary representation of the take-over of America by Spanish invaders. The work of art is very important to Western art history. It mainly draws attention to the Spanish intruders’ cruel disturbance of the ‘heavenly New World.’ The painting has been on display since July 4 on the Rijksmuseum’s Middle Ages & Renaissance floor.
