Existing owner-occupied homes in the Netherlands were 9.3 percent more expensive in August than in the same month last year, Statistics Netherlands and the Land Registry reported on Friday. The price increase was higher in August than in previous months.

Almost half, 46 percent, of the Dutch population saw their purchasing power decrease last year, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday. The purchasing power developments varied considerably in 2017. For a fifth of the population, purchasing power decreased by at least 7 percent. Another fifth saw their purchasing power increase by 10.9 percent.

The number of millionaires in the Netherlands keeps growing. In 2016 the country counted 112 thousand millionaire households, the highest number since this annual study started in 2006, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday.

Last year CO2 emissions in the Netherlands were at the same level as in 1990, Statistics Netherlands reported. Though the emission of other greenhouse gasses - methane, nitrous oxide and F-gasses - halved in that period. The total greenhouse gas emissions were 13 percent lower in 2017 than in 1990.

A total of 163 billion kilograms of CO2 were emitted in the Netherlands last year, about the same as in 1990. Though the stats office points out that the sectors that produce greenhouse gasses have grown considerably since 1990.

The life expectancy for Dutch boys and girls born between 2011 and 2016 increased by six months to 81.5 years, Statistics Netherlands reported. That is a lower increased compared to the previous periods.

Life expectancy increases are also slowing down in the rest of Europe. On average, people in the European Union are expected to live to the age of 81 years, ten months older than in the previous 5 year period.

For the first time in five years, the number of people killed by murder or manslaughter in the Netherlands increased. Last year 158 people were killed in a crime, 50 more than in 2016, according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Thursday.

Ten years after the outbreak of the credit crisis, the average selling prices of existing owner-occupied homes in the Netherlands are back on the level of 2008. Though the recovery can mainly be seen in the Randstad area. Prices in the big cities are now far above the 2008 level. But in many places outside the Randstad, house prices are still lower than before the crisis, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday.

Of the workers who left the construction sector after the economic crisis in 2008, only 15 percent returned to the sector before 2017, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday. Many found work in another industry. Another part retired or passed away in the meantime. 

Staff shortages increased significantly in construction over the past years. In addition to material shortage, the need for construction workers is seen as the main obstacle to growth in the sector, according to the stats office.

Many Dutch municipalities with a university or college have more young female residents than young male residents, Statistics Netherlands reported on Wednesday. The difference is biggest in Utrecht, where there are only 73 men for every 100 women in the age group 20 to 25 years old. 

Leiden counts 74 young men for a 100 young women, Maastricht 76, Nijmegen 77 and Wageningen 79. Also in Amstelveen and Weesp, where many Amsterdam students live, there are more young women than young men.

A total of 86 residents of the Netherlands drowned in the country last year, the , according to figures Statistics Netherlands released on Thursday. This number has been around 80 for years.

The number of drownings in the Netherlands decreased significantly since 1950, when there were over 500 drownings. In total nearly 15 thousand Dutch have drowned since then.

The Dutch economy continues to grow strongly and economic growth is even accelerating, according to Statistics Netherlands. In the second quarter the Dutch economy grew by 0.7 percent compared to the first quarter of this year. The stats office attributes the accelerating growth to foreign trade and higher investments.

The number of open vacancies in the Netherlands reached record high in the second quarter of this year. At the end of June there were 251 thousand open vacancies, a growth of 16 thousand in the second quarter. With that the previous record from the end of 2007 was broken. Then there were 249 thousand open vacancies in the country, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday.

The number of Dutch people who object to organ donation increased from 1.7 million in 2017 to 1.9 million this year, Statistics Netherlands reported on Thursday. The number of people who gave consent to have their organs donated after death also increased, from 3.6 million to 3.7 million.

Some 700 thousand people decided to leave the decision of organ donation up to their next of kin.

In the first half of this year the Netherlands population grew by 32 thousand people, compared to 35 thousand in the first half of last year. This slower growth can be attributed to the flu epidemic in the country in the first months of 2018, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday. The Netherlands currently has 17.2 million inhabitants.

Last year 29 percent of Dutch employees worked overtime on a regular basis. Overtime work is most common among managers and people with a pedagogic profession - 56 percent and 45 percent respectively regularly work more hours than stated in their contracts, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday.

The prices of existing homes in the Netherlands increased by 8.8 percent in the second quarter compared to a year earlier, reaching a record high. The number of home sales decreased almost everywhere in the country, Statistics Netherlands and the Land Registry reported on Friday.

Cancer was the most common cause of death in the Netherlands last year, with 31 percent of the 150 thousand people who passed away dying of the disease, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday.

More men than women died of cancer last year. 35 percent of the men who died in 2017 died of cancer, compared to 27 percent of women. The number of people who died of cancer also increased. Last year 47 thousand people in the Netherlands died of cancer, compared to 45,279 in 2016, 44,195 in 2015 nd 42,984 in 2014.

State Secretary Paul Blokhuis of Public Health will critically look into the cause of the increased number of suicides in the Netherlands, he said on Tuesday. He wants to know what caused the increase, and whether it is a one-time peak or if something else is going on, NU.nl reports.

The number of teenagers committing suicide in the Netherlands is increasing alarmingly. Last year the number teens who died by suicide nearly doubled, Statistics Netherlands reported on Tuesday.

In total 1,917 people committed suicide in the Netherlands last year, 23 more than in 2016. The number of teens between the ages of 10 and 20 that died by suicide increased from 48 in 2016 to 81 last year.

The number of vehicles on Dutch roads increased slightly over the past year. At the start of this year there were 12.5 million registered vehicles in the Netherlands, 2 percent more than in early 2017, Statistics Netherlands reported.

Almost all types of vehicles saw an increase, delivery vans in particular. At the start of 2018 there were more than 883 thousand delivery vans in the country, an increase of 5 percent compared to a year earlier.

Nearly half of Dutch children between the ages of 4 and 12 years did not get enough exercise last year, according to figures Statistics Netherlands and public health institute RIVM released on Friday. According to the , kids in this age group must get "moderately intense" exercise, like walking, cycling or playing outside at least 1 hour per day.

House prices in the Netherlands reached record high in May, rising above the peak in August 2008 to the highest level ever, according to figures Statistics Netherlands and the Land Registry released on Thursday.

Last month the average price to buy a house in the Netherlands was 283,945 euros, 9 percent higher than a year earlier. This only includes existing owner-occupied homes, new construction is not included in these figures. In April house prices were also almost 9 percent higher than they were in April 2017.

Dutch people see speeding, dog poop and parking problems as the biggest sources of nuisance in their neighborhoods, according to the Safety Monitor that Statistics Netherlands published on Monday.

Over a quarter of Dutch, 26.7 percent, consider speeding the biggest problem. 17.9 percent think that dealing with dog poop should be a priority. And 15.4 percent are annoyed by parking problems.
