The court sentenced 21-year-old Azim A. to 10 years in prison and institutionalized psychiatric treatment for last year. He was convicted of attempted manslaughter. The student, Sidney Ruiter, survived the shooting, but is permanently paralyzed, RTL Nieuws reports.

The court in Rotterdam sentenced 59-year-old Albert B. to 18 years in prison for raping and murdering two prostitutes in the city in the 1990's. The court found it convincingly proven that B. was the person who committed these crimes, NU.nl reports.

The court in Assen sentenced a 46-year-old former police officer to one year in prison, six months of which conditionally suspended, for the possession and distribution of child pornography. The Public Prosecutor demanded 15 months in prison against the Assen man, NU.nl reports.

The former cop was also accused of showing his genitals to two of his daughter's friends. The girls were 10 and 12 years old at the time.

The court in Alkmaar sentenced 26-year-old Lars de R. from Krommenie to four years in prison and institutionalized psychiatric treatment for sexually abusing 10 underage boys in Netherlands, India and Croatia, NOS reports.

De R. became famous when he reached the finals of talent show Holland's Got Talent at the age of 16 in 2009. The court found him guilty of having sex with ten boys multiple times over the course of eight years. The youngest victim was 4-years-old at the time.

A man was found dead next to a high wall around the prison in Lelystad at around 6:00 a.m. on Thursday morning. There are no indications of a crime and it is believed the man became unwell and then died, the police said on Twitter.

There were attempts to resuscitate the man, but it was already too late, Het Parool reports. The man was already dead when he was found. According to the newspaper, the body was found on the fenced grounds of the prison on Larsedreef.

The court in Amsterdam convicted seven out of eight men for public violence for their role in a brawl in Amsterdam's Red Light District which ended in the death of 32-year-old Robert Gerritsen two years ago. The court ruled that the blow that ended Gerritsen's life was made in self defense, and 22-year-old Romanian Mirci M. was therefore not punished for it, RTL Nieuws reports.

A 38-year-old Afghan refugee who was convicted of raping an 18-year-old woman with a slight mental impairment in 2016, received a lower sentence from the court in Amsterdam to prevent him being deported, the Telegraaf reports.

The Public Prosecutor demanded 2 years in prison against Zaman S. for the rape. But the court ruled that the sentence must not have the consequence that he is deported, according to the newspaper.

On Wednesday the Public Prosecutor demanded prison sentences up to nine years against the nine men suspected of involvement in a failed attempt to hijack a helicopter and break gang leader Benaouf A. out of the prison in Roermond. Some of the suspects are also facing charges of weapons possession and possession of stolen cars, NU.nl reports.

Another suspect was arrested for involvement in a in Roermond. The man turned himself in to the police on Wednesday, the Prosecutor said on Monday. 39-year-old Abdelghafour L. is the ninth and final suspect in this case, Het Parool reports.

A Syrian man was sentenced to two years in prison, four months of which conditionally suspended, for trafficking children through Schiphol. Between December 2016 and February 2018 the man smuggled five children from Greece, through Schiphol and into the Netherlands, AT5 reports.

According to the Public Prosecutor, the man himself is an asylum seeker from Syria. He told the court that he wanted to help separated families by bringing their children to them. He called the trafficking an expression of "charity", according to the broadcaster.

The court in Amsterdam sentenced 34-year-old Quincy S. to 25 years in prison for preparing an assassination on a criminal from Almere and killing Youssef El Kahtaoui during a shooting in Amsterdam in May 2015. The Public Prosecutor had demanded life in prison against S., NU.nl reports.

A 41-year-old former gym teacher from Siddeburen was sentenced on appeal to two years in prison, one of which conditionally suspended, for sexually abusing a pupil. The sentence is equal to that previously imposed by the court in Groningen, Dagblad van het Noorden reports.

The former gym teacher at the Fivelcollege in Delfzijl, which is now the Ems Delta College, had sexual contact with a pupil between 2010 and 2012. The girl was 15-years-old when the relationship started. She eventually reported the man to the police herself.

Marcel S. was sentenced to 12 years in prison and institutionalized psychiatric treatment for the death of his 10-year-old son Diego. The court in Rotterdam considered it proven that the 39-year-old man strangled his son to death in anger after his wife left him and convicted him of manslaughter, ANP reports.

A 60-year-old truck driver from the Netherlands was sentenced to 10 years in prison in Great Britain for cocaine trafficking. He was caught smuggling 15 kilograms of the drug into the country early this year. According to the British Prosecutor, the drugs are worth around 1.5 million pounds, or about 1.7 million euros, RTL Nieuws reports.

The Dutch man was arrested at Harwich harbor on January 22nd, shortly after arriving there with his truck. He declared that he was carrying computer parts.

A 75-year-old man from Tilburg was sentenced to eight years in prison in Nepal for sexually abusing two underage boys. He will serve his sentence in the Asian country and also has to pay compensation to his victims, AD reports.

The government is planning to close four prisons in the Netherlands, sources told newspaper AD. The prisons need to close because there are too many empty cells in the country, but this will also cause job losses for prison staff.

The prisons in Zoetermeer, Zeist, Almere and Zwaag are on the list to be closed, according to the newspaper. By choosing those prisons, the government hopes to save prisons outside the Randstad, where prison workers will have a harder time finding new work.

It is expected that later this year a decision will be made about the early release of Dutch-Surinamese man Jaitsen Singh, who has been in prison in the United States for 34 years. There is a chance that he was unjustly convicted of the murders of his wife and daughter, ANP reports.

Minister Stef Blok of Foreign Affairs said that the Netherlands expressed its support for an early release on humanitarian grounds. Singh is getting consular assistance from the Netherlands.
