Peanut butter floor draws crowds to Rotterdam museum; At least 1 left with sticky feet

The Peanut Butter Floor by the late artist Wim T. Schippers has been on display in the depot of Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in Rotterdam since Friday. The artwork is very popular and has drawn many visitors to the museum, including one who accidentally stepped in it and another who dropped their phone into the peanut butter, a spokesperson for the museum told AD.

One visitor stepped just a little too far forward when looking at the artwork and ended up with his shoe in the 25 square meters of peanut butter. “The man was naturally horrified when he saw what was on his shoe,” the spokesperson said.

Museum workers also had to fish a phone from the peanut butter after a visitor had dropped it while trying to take a photo. The museum is well prepared for these kinds of accidents, the spokesperson said.

Staff members immediately go to assist the visitor so that they do not spread peanut butter through the entire depot. This is, in part, to keep the depot clean, but also to avoid contact with anyone with a peanut allergy.

The museum also has “peanut butter plasterers” on standby to quickly repair the artwork after accidental contact.

Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen is displaying The Peanut Butter Floor again to commemorate Schippers, who passed away on June 10. The 25-square-meter artwork contains approximately 390 kilograms of peanut butter.
